Grief is not limited to bereavement. It encompasses the loss of a relationship, a marriage, a friendship, a career, a home, a pregnancy, an identity, a life you had planned, or a version of yourself you once knew. All of these losses are real. All of them deserve care.
Complicated grief, sometimes called prolonged grief disorder, can develop when the grieving process becomes stuck, leading to extended and debilitating distress that significantly impairs daily functioning.
Grief counselling offers something rare and essential: a space where your grief is not rushed, minimized, or pathologized. A space where it is simply held.
Common signs and presentations
You may be experiencing grief and loss if you recognise any of the following:
- Intense sadness, numbness, disbelief, or emotional shock following a loss
- Preoccupation with the person or thing lost, intrusive thoughts or images
- Difficulty accepting the reality of the loss even when time has passed
- Anger, guilt, blame, or ambivalence, especially when the loss was complicated
- Avoiding reminders of the loss or, conversely, being unable to engage with normal life
- Social withdrawal, isolation, and difficulty reconnecting with daily routines
- A sense that life has lost meaning or purpose
- Grief that feels “stuck,” not moving through in the way expected
- Physical symptoms including fatigue, sleep disturbance, appetite changes, or somatic pain
What to expect in sessions
Grief counselling provides a safe, non-judgemental space to process your loss at your own pace. Sessions integrate your cultural and spiritual beliefs, helping you find a way to carry your grief while rebuilding your life.
There is no timeline for grief, and therapy does not impose one. What it offers is a consistent, attuned, skilled presence, someone who can sit with you in the hardest of it and help you find your way through at a pace that is yours.
Some sessions are deeply emotional. Others are quieter. All of them move toward the same destination: a life in which your loss is integrated, honoured, and no longer something that stops you from living fully.
